I'm thrilled to share the first professional review of my debut novel, Coddled Children, which I received yesterday. I'm profoundly thankful to the Dutch Book Reviews Blog for their fantastic review.
Coddled Children
In *Coddled Children*, Van Dijk depicts a dystopian society where nuclear war survivors are compelled to coexist within a dome. The narrative delves into a community torn by ideological polarities and divisions, suggesting that the real resolution resides in the 'more neutral' middle ground. Uniformity pervades every aspect of life. The pivotal inquiry is whether such uniformity culminates in increased happiness for the populace.
No More Setbacks?
The title *Coddled Children* refers to a generation raised without setbacks or obstacles, with every aspect of their lives meticulously arranged and planned. This concept is intriguingly explored through the characters Kitty and Joshua, who each provide a unique perspective on this carefully controlled society.
Even sexual acts are monitored, preceded by a contractual conversation. Is this an absurd form of romanticism, or does it reflect the trends we see emerging in our own society? It's up to the reader to decide: is this a comforting safety net, or an excessive control?
The Story
Kitty, a twenty-year-old woman, lives in the so-called Free Nations, a society established on the principles of radical equality following a catastrophic nuclear war. Despite living in an ostensibly perfect and contented environment, Kitty feels a deep sense of dissatisfaction. Her pursuit of happiness and meaning sets off a chain of events that overturn her life. The author skillfully portrays Kitty's internal struggles and her feelings of estrangement, engaging the reader in her search for truth.
White Men
Joshua, a two-year-old survivor of the nuclear war, has since lived in appalling conditions on society's outskirts. His tale sharply contrasts with Kitty's, highlighting the grim realities of her supposed utopia. Labeled as one of the 'white men', Joshua is vilified by the new regime, facing punishment and incarceration for past crimes ranging from colonization to capitalism.
His vision of a liberated world and participation in a rebellion against the Free Nations adds a thrilling and complex dimension to the story.
A powerful message
The power of *Coddled Children* resides in the author's nuanced portrayal of the ideological extremes represented by 'left' and 'right', embodied in the characters Gwyn and Rupert, without casting judgment. It encourages readers to engage in critical thinking and to own their beliefs, warning that blind adherence to extremes can undermine freedom and autonomy.
The novel's world-building and thematic exploration are robust, providing deep reflections on contemporary society and the dangers of shirking life's challenges. Its compelling narrative ensures readers remain engrossed from beginning to end.
Writing Style
Jeanette van Dijk's writing exhibits the finesse of an experienced author. The narrative progresses smoothly, ensuring a compelling 'read-through factor.' While certain scenes, including a fight and a rape, are depicted with graphic detail and may be unsettling, they integrate well into the story, contributing to its authentic portrayal.
No Light Fare
*Coddled Children* is a powerful and relevant book that boldly highlights the dangers of ideological extremes and overprotected upbringing. While the use of 'they/them' instead of personal pronouns can be frustrating and difficult to get used to, the terms PV (person-with-a-vagina) and PP (person-with-a-penis) add a touch of humor. Personally, I hope such terms never become commonplace.
The stories of Kitty and Joshua serve as a warning for future generations and a plea for the importance of setbacks and personal responsibility. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in dystopian tales with a profound social message.
